Graphyllium

Graphyllium Clem., Botanical Survey of Nebraska 5: 6 (1901).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2133; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11445, 10 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata in linear rows on woody stems, semi-immersed, elongate, hysteriform, black, coriaceous, glabrous, with a central long ostiolar opening. Peridium comprising 2–3 layers of brown, relatively thick cells of textura angularis, inner cells flattened, thin-walled and lighter. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, clavate to cylindrical, short-stalked, numerous in a basal cluster from thick, hyaline basal pseudoparenchyma layer. Pseudoparaphyses lacking. Ascospores applanate, muriform, with 3–4 transverse septa, (0)1–2 longitudinal septa, brown to dark brown. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2011).

 Type species: Graphyllium chloes Clem.

Notes: Graphyllium is characterised by hysteriform, black, coriaceous ascomata, clavate to cylindrical asci and applanate, muriform brown ascospores with applanate, muriform, with 3–4 transverse septa, (0–)1–2 longitudinal septa. Shoemaker and Babcock (1992) placed Graphyllium in Hysteriaceae based on the hysterothecia with a slit like opening. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) listed Graphyllium in Diademaceae. Zhang et al. (2011) re-described G. chloes and chose NEB 158190 as the lectotype and NEB 158189 as the syntype. Zhang et al. (2011) suggested the placement of Graphyllium in Hysteriaceae based on the longitudinal opening and hysterothecium-like ascomata. Sequence data is lacking for Graphyllium hence, it is currently placed in Hysteriales genus incertae sedis. Fresh collections are needed to confirm the correct placement of Graphyllium.
