Homortomyces
Homortomyces Crous & M.J. Wingf., in Crous et al., IMA Fungus 3(2): 111 (2012).
Index Fungorum number: IF 801349; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07968, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.
Foliicolous, associated with leaf spots. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, black, globose, with central ostiole; wall consisting of 4–7 layers of brown textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells or one supporting cell, hyaline, cylindrical, with 1–4 inconspicuous percurrent proliferations at apex. Paraphyses intermingled among conidiogenous cells, extending above conidia, hyaline, smooth, cylindrical, flexuous, apex obtuse, sparingly septate. Conidia brown, ellipsoid to subcylindrical, verruculose, transversely euseptate, septa with visible central pore, becoming muriformly septate in older cultures, apex obtuse, base truncate with visible scar, basal or displaced towards the side (adapted from Crous et al. 2012).
Type species: Homortomyces combreti Crous & M.J. Wingf.
Notes: Homortomyces is characterised by pycnidial, black, globose conidiomata, hyaline conidiophores with cylindrical, 1–4 inconspicuous percurrent proliferations at apex, and brown, ellipsoid to subcylindrical, verruculose conidia. Homortomyces resembles Stilbospora in morphology, but can be distinguished by the pycnidial conidiomata with a central ostiole while Stilbospora has acervulate conidiomata (Crous et al. 2012). Homortomyces also resembles genera such as Endocoryneum, Hendersoniopsis, Angiopomopsis, and Ceratopycnis but differs in having paraphyses while the other genera lack paraphyses (Sutton 1980, Crous et al. 2012). In the phylogenetic analysis of Crous et al. (2012), Homortomyces forms a distinct lineage basal to Botryosphaeriaceae and treated the genus as incertae sedis. Homortomyces differs from genera in Botryosphaeriaceae in having uniloculate, thin-walled ascomata, 3-septate, pigmented ascospores and distoseptate conidia (Phillips et al. 2013). Thambugala et al. (2016) reported the sexual morph of H. tamaricis and assigned Homortomyces to a new family Homortomycetaceae. Homortomyces is a distinct genus in Homortomycetaceae with good statistical support but more collections are required to confirm the taxonomic placement of the family in Dothideomycetes. Molecular markers available for Homortomyces are ITS, LSU and SSU.
