Holmiellales » Holmiellaceae

Holmiella Petrini, Samuels & E. Müll., Berichte der Schweizerischen Botanischen Gesellschaft 89: 83 (1979).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2344; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00349, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead wood in terrestrial habitats. Sexual morph: Ascomata apothecial, solitary, superficial, exposing a velvet hymenium when mature, globose, black. Exciple pseudoparenchymatous. Hamathecium composed of filamentous, septate, branched, hyaline, anastomosing pseudoparaphyses, forming a dark brown epithecium above the asci. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, clavate, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores 2–3-seriate overlapping, clavate to ellipsoidal, uniseptate, brown to dark brown. Asexual morph: corniculariella-like. Conidiomata pycnidial, globose, black, superfcial or immersed in cultures. Conidiophores branched, hyaline, septate. Conidiogenous cells integrated, subulate, hyaline. Conidia straight to curved, hyaline. Chlamydospores may present (adapted from Maharachchikumbura et al. 2020).

Type species: Holmiella sabina (De Not.) Petrini, Samuels & E. Müll.

Notes: Holmiella is characterised by solitary, superficial ascomata, pseudoparenchymatous exciple, bitunicate clavate asci and 2–3-seriate overlapping, clavate to ellipsoidal, uniseptate, brown to dark brown ascospores. Holmiella sabina was previously known as Triblidium sabinum but was not congeneric with the type species of Triblidium (Reid & Pirozynski 1966, Petrini et al. 1979). Holmiella sabina has been assigned to several genera (Kutorga & Hawksworth 1997). Kutorga and Hawksworth (1997) added the second species H. macrospora based on morphology. Yacharoen et al. (2015) re-examined the specimen from Pakistan (IMI 177087) under the name Eutryblidiella sabina and accepted Holmiella in Patellariaceae. Pem et al. (2018) introduced Holmiella junipericola and H. juniperi-semiglobosae based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis of ITS, LSU and SSU sequence data. Holmiella was placed in Patellariaceae, later, Maharachchikumbura et al. (2020) erected the new order Holmiellales and new family Holmiellaceae to accommodate Holmiella based on morphology, phylogenetic analyses of LSU, SSU, ITS, TEF, RPB2 and TUB sequence data and divergence time estimates. Holmiella is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and type genus of Holmiellaceae. Molecular markers available for Holmiella are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
