Gloniella

Gloniella Sacc., Syll. fung. (Abellini) 2: 765 (1883).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2089; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08054, 42 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Perithecia erumpent, oblong linear, carbonaceous, black, with longitudinal crack dehiscent. Asci typically 4–8 spores, paraphysate. Ascospores oblong to fusoid, 2-pluriseptate, usually 3-septate, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Saccardo 1883).

Type species: Gloniella sardoa Sacc. & Traverso

Notes: Zogg (1962) recognized six taxa, three on ferns from Europe and the Mediterranean. Sydow (1922) added G. abietina from wood of Abies grandis in Idaho. Teng (1936) added G. angustispora on wood from China. More recently, Checa et al. (2007) identified G. gracilis on branch from Costa Rica. Gloniella is characterised by erumpent perithecia, 4–8 spored asci and oblong to fusoid, 2-pluriseptate, usually 3-septate, hyaline ascospores. Gloniella can be differentiated from other genera in Hysteriaceae based on its hyaline phragmospores. Molecular data is lacking for the type species of Gloniella. Fresh collections and DNA sequence data is needed to confirm the correct taxonomic placement of Gloniella.
