Description:

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata 630–650 μm diam., 250–275 μm high, apothecioid, black, lirelliform, aggregated or solitary, initially perithecioid and immersed in host thallus becomes apothecioid and superficial when mature. Exciple 12–19 μm, paraplectenchymatous. Hymenium 90–136 μm, hyaline to brownish. Subhymenium hyaline, c. 19–25 μm. Epihymenium 30–45 μm, dark brown pigmented. Paraphyses 1.5–3.2 μm, sparsely branched, septate, constricted at the septa hyaline. Asci 55–85 × 10–15 μm (x̄ = 70.6 × 13.1 µm, n = 10), 8-spored, clavate to cylindric clavate, wall apically strongly thickened, with a distinct ocular chamber. Ascospores 12.8–14.5 × 5.2–8 μm (x̄ = 13.7 × 6.2 µm, n = 10), uniseptate, hyaline, strongly constricted at the septa, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Material examined: France, on dead stem (BR5030050227787).

Importance and distribution

Melaspilea forms part of a rich, mid elevation, shade epiphytic lichen community dominated by crustose Betulaceae, Coenogoniaceae, Graphidaceae, Ramalinaceae, and Pertusariaceae. Melaspilea has a worldwide distribution.
