Phaeothecoidiella

Phaeothecoidiella Batzer & Crous, in Yang et al., Persoonia 24: 30 (2010).

Index Fungorum number: IF 514394; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06973; 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Hyphomycetous. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium consisting of brown, smooth to finely roughened, branched, regularly septate hyphae, becoming wider, dark brown, with irregular warts, encased in a thick mucilaginous sheath. Endoconidia developing like phragmospores inside hyphae, pale to medium brown, aseptate, thin-walled, subcylindrical to broadly ellipsoid but becoming more globose, dark brown and roughened upon release; at times with a thin, inconspicuous septum (Yang et al. 2010).

Type species: Phaeothecoidiella missouriensis Batzer & Crous

Notes: Phaeothecoidiella is characterised by brown, smooth to finely roughened mycelium and endoconidia developing like phragmospores. Phaeothecoidiella resembles members of Teratosphaeriaceae mainly Hyphospora, Phaeotheca and Phaeothecoidea in having pigmented endoconidia but can be differentiated based on DNA sequence data (Crous et al. 2009). Phaeothecoidiella is a distinct and well-separated genus in Phaeothecoidiellaceae. Molecular markers available for Phaeothecoidiella are ITS, LSU and RPB2.
