Naetrocymbe

Naetrocymbe Körb., Parerga lichenol. (Breslau) 5: 441 (1865).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3410; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07878, 25 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytic on twigs or wood. Sexual morph: Mycelium branched, septate, brown, covering the host surface. Ascomata immersed, surrounding by dark brown fungal tissue, subglobose, black, containing a single chamber, ostiolate. Peridium thin, composed of dark brown to hyaline cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium of wide and hyaline pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, thick-walled, obpyriform, apically rounded, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores multi-seriate, oblong to long ellipsoid, hyaline, uniseptate, smooth-walled, slightly constricted at the septum. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hyde et al. 2013).

 Type species: Naetrocymbe fuliginea Körb.

Notes: Naetrocymbe is characterised by subglobose, black ascomata, obpyriform, apically rounded asci and oblong to long ellipsoid, hyaline, uniseptate ascospores. Reynolds (1971) transferred several species of Naetrocymbe to Limacinula. Luttrell (1973) considered Naetrocymbe as a doubtful genus. Barr (1979a) and Eriksson (1981) regarded Naetrocymbe as a distinct genus but without familial rank. Harris (1995) treated Naetrocymbe as a genus of non-lichen-forming fungi. Coppins (2002) and Roux (2009) reported that N. saxicola and N. atractospora are associated with Trentepohlia algae. The taxonomy of Naetrocymbe has been confusing in recent years and several authors treated Naetrocymbe species as part of Arthopyrenia (Aptroot 2002a, Coppins 2002, Orange 2009). Naetrocymbe differs from Arthopyrenia in having temperate to boreal distribution, long, narrow physes, obpyriform asci with a distinct apical area without a nasse, ornamented ascospores, and short, rod-like conidia. Naetrocymbe is a distinct and type genus of Naetrocymbaceae but lacks molecular data. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Naetrocymbe.
