Gobabebomyces

Gobabebomyces Crous, in Crous et. al., Persoonia 45: 273 (2020).

Saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata erumpent, pycnidial, opening via irregular rupture of epidermis, brown, subglobose, somewhat flattened, exuding a brown conidial mass; wall of 3–4 layers of brown textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells lining inner cavity, hyaline, smooth, ampulliform to doliiform, phialidic. Conidia solitary, medium brown, verruculose, aseptate, ellipsoid, thick-walled with obtuse ends. Hyphae hyaline to brown, encased in mucoid sheath, constricted at septa, forming hyaline, smooth, aseptate ellipsoid conidia with obtuse ends, becoming brown and verruculose, and undergoing microcyclic conidiation (adapted from Crous et al. 2020).

Type species: Gobabebomyces vachelliae Crous

Notes: Gobabebomyces is characterised by erumpent, pycnidial conidiomata, ampulliform to doliiform, phialidic conidiophores, and verruculose, aseptate, ellipsoid, thick-walled conidia. Gobabebomyces resembles Lembosiniella in forming dark brown to black, superficial, irregular leaf spots with linear to Y-shaped hysterothecia on the host substrate (Crous et al. 2019b). Gobabebomyces differs from Lembosiniella in its ecology as the latter occurs on Eucalyptus spp. in Australia while Gobabebomyces is reported from leaves of Vachellia (= Acacia) erioloba (Fabaceae) in Africa (Namibia). Species of Lembosiniella are sterile in culture while Gobabebomyces forms erumpent colonies with sparse mycelium in culture. Gobabebomyces is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Endosporiaceae. Molecular markers available for Gobabebomyces include ITS and LSU.
