Yoshinagella japonica

Yoshinagella japonica Höhn., Fragm. Mykol. 122: 293 (1913).

Index Fungorum number: IF 248507; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12540, Fig. 1

Description:

Parasitic on upper surface of living leaves. Sexual morph: Ascostromata 650–890 μm diam., 230–350 μm high, solitary or ingroup, scattered to gregarious, superficial, cushion-like, flat, rounded, irregular at the margin, dark brown to black, coriaceous, flattened at the centre, carbonaceous. Locules 239–260 μm diam., 175–360 μm high, immersed in the ascostromata, arranged in a circular margin, globose to irregular. Wall of ascostromata 60–75 μm, two to three layered, with outer layer comprising large dark-brown cells of textura angularis, middle layer pale brown cells of textura angularis, inner layer hyaline cells of textura angularis. Peridium 20–35 μm, surrounding the locules, composed of small hyaline cells intermixed with ascogenous hyphae and pseudoparaphyses. Hamathecium 1.5–2.5 μm, comprising dense, septate, branched, cellular pseudoparaphyses, branching above the asci. Asci 50−102 × 7−11 µm (x̄ = 79.8 × 9.8 µm, n = 10), 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical, with a short furcate pedicel, apically rounded with a distinct ocular chamber. Ascospores 15−20 × 4.8−5.3 µm (x̄ = 18.2 × 5.1 µm, n = 10), 1-seriate, fusiform, pointed at the ends, hyaline, 3-septate, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Material examined: see Japan, Seto Inland Sea, Shikoku, Inosawa, Agekura-mura, Tosa, on leaves of Quercus stenophylla (Fagaceae), 1 June 1916, T. Yoshinaga (BISH 608789, reference specimen designated here).

Importance and distribution

Yoshinagella comprises two species known on Pasania glabra (Fagaceae), Phyllostachys bambusoides (Poaceae), Quercus glauca (Fagaceae) and Sasa veitchii sp. (Poaceae) in Asia (Japan). Three species have been transferred to Coccodiella and Coccostroma.
