Westea

Westea H.J. Swart, Trans. Br. mycol. Soc. 91(3): 456 (1988).

Index Fungorum number: IF 25274; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12527, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Mycelium both in and on the host leaf. Sexual morph: Hyphae thin, hyaline to straw-colored. Ascomata hypophyllous, seated among the epidermal hairs, small, globose or broadly ellipsoidal. Ascoma wall consisting of an outer zone composed of 2−3 layers of firm walled brown pseudoparenchyma and an inner zone of flattened hyaline cells. Asci bitunicate, obovoid with a very short stalk, 8-spored. Ascospores hyaline, phragmosporous, pronounced near median constriction at which they easily break. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Swart 1988).

Type species: Westea banksiae H.J. Swart

Notes: Westea is characterised by thin, hyaline to straw-colored hyphae, globose or broadly ellipsoidal ascomata, obovoid asci with a very short stalk and hyaline, phragmosporous ascospores. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Westea in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Westea.
