Troposporella

Troposporella P. Karst., Hedwigia 31: 299 (1892).

Index Fungorum number: IF 10325; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12523, 5 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), molecular data available for 2 species and for some unnamed species.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Sporodochia pulvinate, superficial farinaceous, sooty or olive. Hyphae (or conidiophores) branched, articulated, subfuligineus (under the lens). Conidia cylindrical, coiled tightly together, subovoid to septate (adapted from Karsten 1892).

Type species: Troposporella fumosa P. Karst.

Notes: Troposporella is characterised by pulvinate, superficial farinaceous sporodochia, branched, articulated, subfuligineus hyphae and cylindrical, coiled tightly together, subovoid to septate conidia. Tsui and Berbee (2010) reinstated Troposporella at the generic level and transferred two species Helicoma monilipes and H. olivaceum to Troposporella based on phylogenetic analysis of SSU and ITS sequence data. Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Troposporella in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Ex-type cultures are available (MUCL 15695). More fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Troposporella. Molecular markers available for Troposporella fumosa are ITS, LSU and SSU and for T. monilipes are ITS and LSU.
