Trichothyriella

Trichothyriella Theiss., Beih. bot. Zbl., Abt. 2 32: 4 (1914).

Index Fungorum number: IF 5593; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12521, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Epiphyllous. Sexual morph: Perithecium orbicular, convex, wrinkled, dark, black, with a radiant fibrous margin. Asci clavate. Ascospores elliptical, continuous, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Asterina quercigena in Berk, ex Cooke 1885).

Type species: Trichothyriella quercigena (Berk. ex Cooke) Theiss.

Notes: Trichothyriella is characterised by orbicular, convex, wrinkled perithecia, clavate asci and elliptical, continuous, hyaline ascospores. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) accepted Trichothyriella in Microthyriaceae. Wu et al. (2011), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) treated Trichothyriella as a doubtful genus and placed it in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Trichothyriella.
