Thalassoascus tregoubovii

Thalassoascus tregoubovii Ollivier [as 'tregoubovi'], C. r. hebd. Séanc. Acad. Sci., Paris 182: 1348 (1926).

Index Fungorum number: IF 280539; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12501, Fig. 1

Description:

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascocarps 450–550 μm diam., 400–650 μm high, subglobose to ellipsoidal, superficial, subiculate, ostiolate, epapillate, subcarbonaceous to leathery, black, gregarious, among a black crust on the holdfasts of the host. Peridium 2–4 μm, composed of irregular or polygonal cells with black incrustations. Ostiole periphysate. Pseudoparaphyses ramose, sticky, completely filling the centrum of immature ascocarps before formation of the ostiole. Asci 135−145 × 13−14 µm (x̄ = 137 × 13.6 µm, n = 10), 8-spored, cylindrical to clavate, stipitate, thick-walled, bitunicate, developing all along the inner wall of the ascocarp, almost up to the ostiole. At ascospore maturity, the upper part of the ectoascus swells and dissolves. The lower half of the ectoascus is persistent and forms a funnel-shaped structure. A granular, cap-like zone is enclosed in the tip of the ascus wall. Ascospores 30−40× 18−25 µm (x̄ = 32.5 × 19.6 µm, n = 10), ellipsoidal, one-septate, markedly constricted at the septum, hyaline, thick-walled, accumulating on top of the ostiole when the substrate is exposed. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Material examined: Italy, Corsica, on Cystoseira balearica (Phaeophyceae), 8 November 1980, J. Kohlmeyer, IMS 271 (NY 01353382).

Importance and distribution

Thalassoascus comprises three species known on Cystoseira (Fucales), Lessonia (Laminariales), Aglaownia and Zanardinia (Cutleriales). Thalassoascus is reported from Europe (France) and South America (Chile).
