Taphrophila

Taphrophila Scheuer, Biblthca Mycol. 123: 171 (1988).

Index Fungorum number: IF 25273; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12494, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on rotten plants. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, solitary, globose to subglobose, with apically branched setae on the top, ostiole central. Hamathecium lacking. Peridium comprising 1–2 layers of brown cells of textura angularis. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, broadly-clavate, slightly curved, short pedicellate. Ascospores multiseriate in ascus, elongate fusiform, trans-septate, ends rounded, hyaline to grayish, wall roughened. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Scheuer 1988 and Boonmee et al. 2017).

 Type species: Taphrophila cornu-capreoli Scheuer

Notes: Taphrophila is characterised by superficial, solitary, globose to subglobose ascomata, broadly-clavate, slightly curved, short pedicellate asci and multiseriate, elongate fusiform, trans-septate ascospores. Matsushima (1975) referred to the asexual morph of Taphrophila as Mirandina. Scheuer (1988) placed Taphrophila in Tubeufiaceae based on its ascomata with dark brown setae. Boonmee et al. (2011) examined the holotype of T. cornu-capreoli from GZU and excluded Taphrophila from Tubeufiaceae based on the small ascomata, thin peridium, branching setae around the ascomata apex, clavate to saccate asci and lack of pseudo paraphyses. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), and Kirk et al. (2013) listed Taphrophila in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Taphrophila.
