Stigmatophragmia

Stigmatophragmia Tehon & G.L. Stout, Mycologia 21(4): 180 (1929).

Index Fungorum number: IF 5255; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05170, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytic on living leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata epiphyllous, widely scattered, flattened, circular, brown, opening by a somewhat umbonate, carbonaceous, with a circular ostiole. Upper wall brown, comprising a layer of pseudoparenchymatous membranous cell. Paraphyses filiform, unbranched. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical, with short pedicel. Ascospores cylindrical, 3-septate, constricted at the septa, tapering at both ends, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zeng et al. 2019).

Type species: Stigmatophragmia sassafrasicola Tehon & G.L. Stout

Notes: Stigmatophragmia was introduced by Tehon and Stout (1929) with S. sassafrasicola as type species. Stigmatophragmia is characterised by epiphyllous, widely scattered ascomata, cylindrical, short pedicellate asci, cylindrical, 3-septate ascospores. Tehon and Stout (1929) placed Stigmatophragmia in Stigmateaceae (Hemisphaeriales). Zeng et al. (2019) re-examined a specimen from ILLS but it was in poor condition. Zeng et al. (2019) provided description based on the protologues and excluded Stigmatophragmia from Micropeltidaceae based on the brown upper walls and ascospores. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Stigmatophragmia.
