Stegothyrium

Stegothyrium Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. -naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 127(4-5): 382 (1918).

Index Fungorum number: IF 5199; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12488, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial and orbiculate, only comprises the upper part, base absent, with a central rounded ostiole. Asci immerged in long paraphyses. Asci unitunicate, with an apical stopper-shaped J+ ring. Ascospores one-celled, elongate-fusoid, hyaline, with one or two guttules, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Höhnel 1918).

Type species: Stegothyrium denudans (Rehm) Höhn.

Notes: Stegothyrium is characterised by superficial and orbiculate ascomata, unitunicate asci and one-celled, elongate-fusoid, hyaline, smooth-walled ascospores with one or two guttules. Rehm (1903) combined S. denudans in Muyocopron. Höhnel (1918) reassigned S. denudans to Stegothyrium. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) placed Stegothyrium in Microthyriaceae. Stegothyrium is unique and differs from other genera in Dothideomycetes in having thick-walled asci that appear bitunicate, but with a J- apical ring, which reveals the presence of unitunicate asci. Wu et al. (2011) examined the syntype of S. denudans (K 158706) and excluded Stegothyrium from Microthyriaceae. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Stegothyrium in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Stegothyrium.
