Spissiomyces

Spissiomyces Lei Su, Li Y. Guo & Xing Z. Liu, Mycologia 107(4): 837 (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 807031; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12486, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Colonies on MEA slow growing, compact, raised centrally, with flat and irregular margin, dark brown to black, dry in appearance. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium composed of branched, thick-walled, yellowish to brown hyphae. Gemmating proliferation is commonly present at the lateral of hyphae. Lateral proliferations can meld to form a kind of aggregated structures, released by schizolytic secession. Conidiogenous cells undifferentiated or poorly differentiated from hyphae, cylindrical, intercalary or terminal, which gradually develop to meristematic conidia. Conidia absent or present as singly, globose or ellipsoidal, dry, dark brown, thick walled. Swollen cells occasionally produced in intercalary position of hyphae (adapted from Su et al. 2015).

Type species: Spissiomyces aggregatus Lei Su, Li Y. Guo & Xing Z. Liu

Notes: Spissiomyces is characterised by yellowish to brown hyphae, schizolytic secession, undifferentiated conidiogenous cells and globose or ellipsoidal, dry, dark brown, thick-walled conidia. Molecular data is available for two species, S. aggregatus (mt SSU, LSU, BTUB, RPB2) and S. ramosus (mt SSU, LSU, BTUB, RPB2). Spissiomyces may warrant familial rank. More collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Spissiomyces.
