Semisphaeria

Semisphaeria K. Holm & L. Holm, Nordic Jl Bot. 11(6): 686 (1991).

Index Fungorum number: IF 25044; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12474, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on branch. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, or erumpent at the basal, mostly solitary, subglobose to globose, comprising thick-walled, carbonaceous, dark brown-walled cells, central ostiole at the top of ascomata, surrounded by septate mycelium, with hyphopodia. Hamathecium not observed. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical, with short or non-pedicle, disappear when mature. Ascospores overlapping, 1-2 seriate, ellipsoid to fusiform, uniseptate, constricted and dark at septum, lower cell shorter and smaller than upper cell, end of lower cells narrow, but end of upper cell rounded, hyaline to brown, smooth-walled, sometimes slightly rough. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Type species: Semisphaeria sigmundii K. Holm & L. Holm

Notes: Semisphaeria is a hygrophilous fungus characterised by strongly carbonaceous ascomata, isodiametric peridial cells comprising of textura angularis, cylindrical asci and ellipsoid to fusiform, hyaline to brown ascospores. The placement of Semisphaeria is uncertain. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Semisphaeria.
