Scolecobonaria

Scolecobonaria Bat., in Batista & Ciferri, Beih. Sydowia 3: 97 (1962).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4946; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12469, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphyllous. Sexual morph: Mycelium spread, thin crustaceous, mucilaginous, fuscous, having irregularly branched hyphae, brown septate constricted with oblong or subcylindrical cells, not setose. Perithecia scattered or subgregarious developed beneath the mycelium, globose-depressed, subcoriaceous, dark-brown, not setose. Asci clavate, bitunicate, short-pedicellate, 8-spored, aparaphysate. Ascospores cylindric lengthened, parallel, straight or curved, 5-13 transversally septate, not constricted, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Batista 1962).

Type species: Scolecobonaria filiformis (W. Yamam.) Bat.

Notes: Scolecobonaria is characterised by thin crustaceous, mucilaginous mycelium, scattered or sub gregarious perithecia, clavate, bitunicate, short-pedicellate, 8-spored asci and cylindric lengthened, parallel, hyaline ascospores. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Scolecobonaria in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to determine the systematic position of Scolecobonaria.
