Saxomyces

Saxomyces Selbmann & Isola, in Wijayawardene et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-017-0386-0, [422] (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF 819855; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12465, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data, and molecular data available for some unnamed species.

Asexual morphic fungi, hyphomycetes. Colonies on MEA very slow growing, compact, heaped, black, dry or wet in appearance. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium composed of branched, torulose, thick-walled, brown hyphae, proliferating enteroblastically, shifting to meristematic development. Conidiophores micronematous. Conidia globose, dry, very thick walled, coated by fragmented incrustations, produced by enteroblastic proliferation and released by schizolytic secession (adapted from Selbmann et al. 2014).

Type species: Saxomyces alpinus L. Zucconi & L. Selbmann

Notes: Saxomyces is characterised by branched, torulose, thick-walled, brown hyphae, micronematous conidiophores and globose, dry, very thick-walled conidia. Saxomyces alpinus was invalidly published [ICN (Melbourne) Art. 40]. Wijayawardene et al. (2017) validated Saxomyces. Molecular markers available for the three species S. alpinus, S. americanus and S. penninicus are LSU, SSU and mtSSU. In-depth analysis of available sequences is needed to determine the systematic position of Saxomyces.
