Sapucchaka

Sapucchaka K. Ramakr., J. Indian bot. Soc. 35: 115 (1956).

 Index Fungorum number: IF 4845; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12463, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Superficial ascomata, black, circular; a radial shield at the margin, decorated with a similar opening in the center; one locule in each ascomata, including a unique hymenium which consist of asci and similar filaments of the paraphyses. Asci bitunicate, 8-spored. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ornamented with a short basal tail-like appendage. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Ramakrishnan 1956).

 Type species: Sapucchaka madreeya K. Ramakr.

Notes: Sapucchaka is characterised by black, circular ascomata, bitunicate, 8-spored asci and one-celled, hyaline ascospores ornamented with a short basal tail-like appendage. Sapucchaka resembles Muyocopron but differs in having basal appendages. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Sapucchaka.
