Pyrenostigme Syd., Annls mycol. 24(5/6): 370 (1926).
Index Fungorum number: IF 4602; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12447, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Parasitic on living leaves of Siparunea patelliformis. Sexual morph: Ascomata black to dark brown, semi-immersed to superficial, scattered, globose to subglobose, thick walled. Peridium composed of brown to black, darkly pigmented, small, thick-walled cells of textura angularis. Pseudoparaphyses not observed. Asci 8–spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, clavate to broadly-clavate, with a short, narrow, furcate pedicel, and with an ocular chamber. Ascospores biseriate, hyaline, aseptate, fusiform to ellipsoid. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Liu et al. 2012).
Type species: Pyrenostigme siparunae Syd.
Notes: Pyrenostigme is characterised by black to dark brown, semi-immersed to superficial ascomata, clavate to broadly-clavate, with a short, narrow, furcate pedicel asci and hyaline, aseptate, fusiform to ellipsoid ascospores. Liu et al. (2012) examined a specimen (S−F7628) and designated it as the lectotype. Liu et al. (2012) accepted Pyrenostigme as a distinct genus in Botryosphaeriales. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed it in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Pyrenostigme.
