Punctillum

Punctillum Petr. & Syd., Annls mycol. 22(3/6): 364 (1924).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4557; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12439, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Parasitic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata black, glabrous, globular, papillate. Hyphae thickened on the outside. Paraphysoids fragmented or absent. Asci bitunicate, ellipsoidal, 4- or 8-spored. Hymenium J + reddish. Ascospores elliptical, 2 or 4 cells, grey-brown. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Petrak 1924).

Type species: Punctillum hepaticarum (Cooke) Petr. & Syd.

Notes: Punctillum is characterised by black, glabrous, globular, papillate ascomata, bitunicate, ellipsoidal, 4- or 8-spored asci and elliptical, 2 or 4 celled, grey-brown ascospores. Clements and Shear (1931) treated Punctillum as a synonym of Didymosphaeria but this was not proven by molecular data and was not followed by subsequent authors. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Punctillum in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Punctillum.
