Pseudopleospora

Pseudopleospora Petr., Annls mycol. 17(2/6): 84 (1920) [1919].

Index Fungorum number: IF 4480; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12437, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Pseudoperithecia elongated in the longitudinal direction, narrowly elongated, more or less gray or blackish, only breaking out with the apex open through an irregular, narrow longitudinal slit, consisting either of only a single, or of 2–3 incomplete cavities, of thin-walled, indistinctly fibrous cellular tissue. Paraphyses indistinct. Asci cylindrical-clavate, sessile or with a very short stalk. Ascospores pear-shaped, broadly rounded at the top, bluntly pointed at the bottom, with 3–5 transverse walls and an incomplete longitudinal wall, dark olive brown. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Petrak 1919).

Type species: Pseudopleospora ruthenica Petr.

Notes: Pseudopleospora is characterised by elongated pseudoperithecia with a narrow longitudinal slit, cylindrical-clavate asci, that are sessile or with a very short stalk and pear-shaped ascospores broadly rounded at the top. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Pseudopleospora in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Pseudopleospora.
