Proliferosphaera
Proliferosphaera T.P. Devi, in Devi et al., Indian Phytopath. 65(4): 395 (2012).
Index Fungorum number: IF 800895; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12429, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium thin, septate, brown. Conidiomata densely compacted in cervuli, brown chlamydospore and intercalary sunk or drowned, brown and transient, irregular shapes, the development of the ampuls and the long rostral. Conidiogenous cells hyaline, glabrous, enteroblastic, holoblastic at various place, the septum varies according to the local supraholoconidiogenous cell. Each forms a single conidium. Conidia hyaline, aseptate to ellipsoid (adapted from Devi et al. 2012).
Type species: Proliferosphaera capsici T.P. Devi
Notes: Proliferosphaera is characterised by dense conidiomata, hyaline, glabrous, enteroblastic conidiogenous cells and hyaline, aseptate to ellipsoid conidia. The sexual morph is unknown. Proliferosphaera is similar to Capitorostrum, Cryptosporiopsis and Dwiroopa in lacking conidiophores and with Phoma, Phomopsis and Endothiella in the presence of more than one ostiole. Proliferosphaera is unique from all genera in Dothideomycetes in the mode of proliferation of the conidiomata. Cultures and sequences are available for the type: PP-2011 isolate 6494, holotype of type: ITCC 6494. Taxon sampling of Devi et al. (2012) was very limited. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Proliferosphaera in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. More taxa with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Proliferosphaera.
