Polystomellopsis

Polystomellopsis F. Stevens, Illinois Biol. Monogr. (Urbana) 8(no. 3): 32 (1924) [1923].

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Stromata hypophyllous, superficial, irregular-oblong, bearing numerous setae especially around the edges. Setae black, straight or irregular, curved, obtuse. Ostioles numerous. Locules many, separated by a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored. Paraphyses filamentous, thin, irregular, gelatinous. Ascospores yellow to brown, oval, continuous, later muriform. Mycelium superficial, yellow to brown, non-hyphopodiate; mycelial setae few, black, irregular in contour. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Stevens 1924).

 Type species: Polystomellopsis mirabilis F. Stevens

           Notes: Polystomellopsis is characterised by hypophyllous, superficial stromata, black, straight or irregular setae, numerous ostioles, 8-spored asci and yellow to brown, oval, continuous, later muriform ascospores. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Polystomellopsis in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Polystomellopsis.
