Index Fungorum number: IF 25659; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12419, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Pseudothecia superficial, hypophyllous, globose, dark brown to black, setose, ostiolate. Setae simple, dark brown, thick walled, septate, paler towards the apex. Wall distinctly three layered. Asci cylindrical, pedicellate, bitunicate, 8-spored. Ascospores pale brown to brown, smooth, uniseriate, fusiform, dictyoseptate. Pseudoparaphyses filiform, hyaline, branched, septate. Mycelium hypophyllous, composed of superficial, hyaline to brown, septate branched smooth hyphae. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Sivanesan 1984).

 Type species: Pleotrichiella australiensis Sivan.

Notes: Pleotrichiella is characterised by superficial, hypophyllous, globose pseudothecia, cylindrical, pedicellate, bitunicate, 8-spored asci, pale brown to brown, smooth, uniseriate, fusiform, dictyoseptate ascospores and hypophyllous hyaline to brown mycelium. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) treated Pleotrichiella in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Pleotrichiella.
