Plejobolus

Plejobolus (E. Bommer, M. Rousseau & Sacc.) O.E. Erikss., Ark. Bot., Ser. 2 6: 431 (1967).

Ophiobolus subgen. Plejobolus E. Bommer, M. Rousseau & Sacc., Syll. fung. (Abellini) 9: 935 (1891).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4205; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12415, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Pseudothecia scattered, immersed, ellipsoidal, each covered by a grey clypeus, ostiole more or less eccentric, towards one end of the venter, perforating the host epidermis but not protruding. Asci numerous, bitunicate, cylindrical, with much thickened, somewhat conical apex, 8-spored. Ascospores parallel, not spirally coiled, almost as long as the ascus, multiseptate and fragmenting at the septa before discharge to give elliptical hyaline part-spores. Pseudoparaphyses filiform. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Dennis 1974).

Type species: Plejobolus arenarius (Sacc., E. Bommer & M. Rousseau) O.E. Erikss.

Notes: Plejobolus is characterised by scattered, immersed, ellipsoidal pseudothecia, bitunicate, cylindrical asci and parallel, not spirally coiled ascospores. Data regarding Plejobolus is lacking. Kirk et al. (2008) treated Plejobolus as a synonym of Robergea. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Plejobolus in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Plejobolus.
