Plagiostromella

Plagiostromella Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. -naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 126(4-5): 372 (1917).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4159; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12413, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata single or aggregated in irregular clusters, immersed in the bark of woody plants with main axis parallel with host surface, each with a lateral, recurved ostiolum. Ostiole collectively erumpent from clustered ascomata or may be united when the individual ascomata are found as cavities in a common stroma. Asci arranged parallel to host surface, bitunicate, 8-spored, embedded in filiform paraphysoids. Ascospores broadly fusoid, phragmosporous, hyaline to brown, thin- to thick-walled, smooth or verrucose. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Bose and Müller 1978).

 Type species: Plagiostromella pleurostoma Höhn.

Notes: Plagiostromella is characterised by single or aggregated ascomata, bitunicate, 8-spored asci and broadly fusoid, phragmosporous, hyaline to brown ascospores. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Plagiostromella in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Plagiostromella.
