Placosphaeria

Placosphaeria (De Not.) Sacc., Michelia 2(no. 6): 115 (1880).

Dothidea subgen. Placosphaeria De Not., Comm. Soc. crittog. Ital. 2(fasc. 3): 490 (1867).

 Index Fungorum number: IF 9423; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12411, 62 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Stromata widely scattered with spruce, blackened epidermis, often finely lobed and covered within, bacillary-spattered with brown algal spermatics, obtuse on both sides, hyaline-plugutulate, supported with very short obtuse basidia (adapted from Saccardo 1880).

Type species: Placosphaeria sedi Sacc.

Notes: Information regarding Placosphaeria is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Placosphaeria in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Placosphaeria.
