Placodothis

Placodothis Syd., Annls mycol. 26(1/2): 133 (1928).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4130; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12407, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Stromata spread over an irregular area, rarely orbicular, formed from a hypha. Perithecia singular or few in the stroma, developed horizontally, with the ostiole bursting with a stromatical outer surface, ovate. Paraphyses most abundantly filiform, abundantly branched. Asci coarsely clavate, 8-spored. Ascospores oblong-clavate or fusoid, transversely pluriseptate, with 1-2 other incomplete longitudinal septa, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Sydow 1928).

 Type species: Placodothis petrakii Syd.

Notes: Placodothis is characterised by stromata, few perithecia, coarsely clavate, 8-spored asci and oblong-clavate or fusoid, transversely pluriseptate ascospores. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Placodothis in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data is needed to confirm the generic position of Placodothis.
