Description:
Saprobic or biotrophic on leaves and stems. Sexual morph: Ascomata 80–120 μm diam., circular, solitary or gregarious, superficial, membranaceous, carbonaceous, dark brown to black, very dry. Peridium and Hamathecium not observed. Asci 30–40 × 5–6 μm (x̄ = 32.2 × 5.2 µm, n = 10), few, 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, oblong to ellipsoidal or broadly clavate, pedicel lacking, ocular chamber not well-developed. Ascospores 10–12 × 2–3 μm (x̄ = 10.2 × 2.1 µm, n = 10), overlapping 2–3-seriate, narrowly ellipsoidal, hyaline, uniseptate, not constricted at the septum, bi-celled. Asexual morph: Unknown.
Material considered: Papua New Guinea, Morobe province, Gumi Divide, Head of Gumi Creek, 25 km W of Bulolo, 7o 13’S, 146 o 25’E, 1700 m alt. on upper branches of a large tree, 13 October 1982, H. Streimann (CANBR 25110, holotype).

Importance and distribution
Philobryon comprises only one species known on leaves of Pleurozia gigantean (Pleuroziaceae) in Oceania (Papua New Guinea).
