Philobryon

Philobryon Döbbeler, Pl. Syst. Evol. 158(2-4): 335 (1988).

 Index Fungorum number: IF 25417; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12388, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic or biotrophic on leaves and stems. Sexual morph: Ascomata circular, solitary or gregarious, superficial, membranaceous, carbonaceous, dark brown to black, very dry. Peridium and Hamathecium not observed. Asci few, 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, oblong to ellipsoidal or broadly clavate, pedicel lacking, ocular chamber not well-developed. Ascospores overlapping 2–3-seriate, narrowly ellipsoidal, hyaline, uniseptate, not constricted at the septum, bi-celled. Asexual morph: Unknown.

 Type species: Philobryon anuliferum Döbbeler

Notes: Information regarding Philobryon is scarce. We examined the holotype specimen from National Botanic Gardens, Canberra (25110) but the specimen is in poor condition. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Philobryon.
