Passerinula

Passerinula Sacc., Grevillea 4(no. 29): 21 (1875).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3761; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12357, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Perithecia membranous-soft, pale in stroma. Sometimes perithecia completely immersed, sometimes in irregular aggregates, sometimes discretely, globular, minute, in white fare to nutshell. Cylindrical ostioles more or less deeply incurved. Ascospores uniseptate and two drops attached to each side of the diaphragm simulate 3-septate, pale sooty. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Saccardo 1875).

 Type species: Passerinula candida Sacc.

Notes: Passerinula is characterised by completely immersed perithecia, more or less deeply incurved ostioles anduniseptate ascospores. Passerinula was synonymized with Spegazzinula Sacc. 1833 but this is not confirmed with molecular data. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) referred Passerinula to Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Passerinula.
