Ophioirenina

Ophioirenina Sawada & W. Yamam., in Imazeki et al., Special Publication College of Agriculture, National Taiwan University 8: 35 (1959).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3605; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00745, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytes on the surface of leaves. Superficial hyphae branched, septate, with 1-celled hyphopodia. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial on surface of leaves, solitary or gregarious, globose to subglobose, glabrous, dark brown to black, central ostiole at maturity. Peridium thick, comprising two strata, outer stratum of thick-walled, brown to dark brown cells of textura angularis to globulosa, inner stratum of hyaline to pale brown, scleroparenchymatous cells of textura angularis to globulosa. Hamathecium aparaphysate. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, clavate, short pedicellate or sometimes apedicellate, ocular chamber absent. Ascospores fasciculate, hyaline to brown, clavate to narrowly fusiform, 4–6-septate, not constricted at septa, slightly darker at septa at maturity, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hongsanan et al. 2015).

Type species: Ophioirenina theae Sawada & W. Yamam.

Notes: Ophioirenina is characterised by branched, septate hyphae, with 1-celled hyphopodia, superficial ascomata, unitunicate, clavate asci and hyaline to brown, clavate to narrowly fusiform, 4–6-septate ascospores. Sawada (1959) placed Ophioirenina in Meliolaceae based on the superficial hyphae with hyphopodia, and globose ascomata developing in black colonies. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) and Kirk et al. (2013) accepted Ophioirenina in Meliolaceae. Ophioirenina differs from members of Meliolales in having 1-celled hyphopodia on the hyphae, papilla with a narrow pore, a peridial wall consisting of two layers of scleroparenchymatous cells of textura angularis and hyaline ascospores. Ophioirenina resembles members of Leptosphaeriaceae based on its scleroplectenchyma cells. Hongsanan et al. (2015) treated Ophioirenina in Dothideomycetes genera, incertae sedis. Wijayawardene et al (2017, 2020) also listed Ophioirenina in Dothideomycetes genera, incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Ophioirenina.
