Omphalospora

Omphalospora Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 13(3/4): 361 (1915).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3571; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00132, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Stroma between cuticle and epidermis, loculi strongly depressing the epidermis. Paraphyses absent. Ascospores unequally two-celled, hyaline, lower cell very small, knob-shaped. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Theissen and Sydow 1915).

Type species: Omphalospora stellariae (Lib.) Theiss. & Syd.

Notes: Omphalospora is characterised by depressed stromata, and unequally 2-celled, hyaline ascospores. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Omphalospora in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic placement of Omphalospora.
