Neoventuria

Neoventuria Syd. & P. Syd., Annls mycol. 17(1): 44 (1919).

= Venturiella Speg., Anal. Mus. nac. B. Aires, Ser. 3 12: 379 (1909).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3491; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12343, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Perithecia lenticular to subhemispherical, umbilicate-ostiolate, membranous, subcoriaceous, minutely covered with some dense, undifferentiated setae, deciduous, minute, sooty apex subhyaline, ornate. Asci cylindrical, cuneate, bitunicate, rounded posteriorly, with a distinct ocular chamber, short pedicellate, mixed with filiform, paraphyseal, rather long. Ascospores on both sides rather obtuse, linearly curved at first 3- later 5-septate, at the septum slightly constricted in the middle, hyaline to olive color. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Venturiella argentinensis in Spegazzini 1909).

Type species: Neoventuria argentinensis (Speg.) Syd. & P. Syd.

Notes: Neoventuria is characterised by lenticular to subhemispherical perithecia, cylindrical, cuneate, bitunicate asci and hyaline to olive color ascospores, linearly curved at first 3- later 5-septate. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Neoventuria in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Neoventuria.
