Neottiosporina
Neottiosporina Subram., Proc. Natl. Inst. Sci. India, B, Biol. Sci. 27: 238 (1961).
Index Fungorum number: IF 9117; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01791, 8 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on a range of host plants. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, immersed, solitary, globose, brown, unilocular, ostiolate. Ostiole central, circular, papillate. Conidiomata wall thin, composed of brown cells of textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells holoblastic, doliiform, determinate, discrete, hyaline, smooth. Conidia cylindrical, navicular to obovoid, apex obtuse, base truncate, hyaline to brown, 2–3-septate, continuous or constricted, thin and smooth-walled, at first enclosed or partially enclosed in a gelatinous sheath that may become everted as an apical and basal appendage (adapted from Sutton 1980; Nag Raj 1993 and Wijayawardene et al. 2016).
Type species: Neottiosporina apoda (Speg.) Subram.
Notes: Neottiosporina is characterised by pycnidial, immersed, solitary, globose, brown, unilocular conidiomata, holoblastic, doliiform conidiogenous cells, and cylindrical, navicular to obovoid conidia surrounded by a gelatinous sheath. Sutton (1980) reported Neottiosporina as having hyaline conidia. Sutton (1980) accepted eight species in Neottiosporina. Nag Raj (1993) pointed out that the conidia are ‘colorless to almost colorless or brown’. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Neottiosporina.
