Neosporidesmium
Neosporidesmium Mercado & J. Mena, Acta Bot. Cubana 59: 2 (1988).
Index Fungorum number: IF 11141; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12338, 15 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies on natural substrate effuse, dark brown and hairy, solitary or scattered. Mycelium superficial and partly immersed in the substratum; hyphae septate, brown, thin-walled, smooth. Conidiomata synnematous, solitary, erect, dark brown to black, main portion more or less cylindrical to gradually attenuated towards the apex. Conidiophores macronematous, synnematous, unbranched, septate, wall thick, smooth, brown to dark brown, diverging laterally and terminally. Conidiogenous cells spread along the upper half to two-third of the synnemata, with laterally splaying out conidiogenous cells, integrated, terminal, monoblastic, determinate, short subcylindrical-conical, doliiform to lageniform, brown to dark brown, thin-walled, smooth. Conidia holoblastic, solitary, dry, acrogenous, straight to somewhat curved, broadly obclavate, (8–)9–15-distoseptate, smooth, brown, with thin outer and thick inner wall layer giving rise to reduced cell lumina, apex obtuse, broadly rounded, with obconically truncate base, a trapezoidal portion of the base usually strongly pigmented, dark brown, sometimes with appendages, appendages 0–1 septate obovoid. Conidial secession schizolytic (adapted from Prasher & Verman 2015, Mel’nik et al. 2016).
Type species: Neosporidesmium maestrense Mercado & J. Mena
Notes: Neosporidesmium is characterised by synnematous, solitary, erect, dark brown to black conidiomata, brown to dark brown conidiophores, terminal, monoblastic, determinate conidiogenous cells and holoblastic, solitary, dry, acrogenous, straight to somewhat curved, broadly obclavate, (8–)9–15-distoseptate conidia. The morphological criteria used for species delineation in Neosporidesmium include proliferation of conidiogenous cells, conidial morphology and overall conidiomatal size (Mercado et al. 1988, Wu & Zhuang 2005). Several authors added new species to Neosporidesmium (Ma et al. 2011, Li et al. 2015, Prasher & Verma 2015, Verma et al. 2021). Molecular data is not available. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Neosporidesmium in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. DNA extracts from Neosporidesmium species are needed to confirm its systematic position.
