Neopeckia

Neopeckia Sacc., Bull. Torrey bot. Club 10: 127 (1883).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3472; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12336, 17 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic or pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Perithecia carbonaceous, fragile, superficial, but with a large subiculum, extensively semi-immersed, globose, papillate, and broadly pertuse. Asci 8-spored, elongated, fully paraphysate. Ascospores uniseptate, not constricted. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Saccardo 1883).

Type species: Neopeckia coulteri (Peck) Sacc.

Notes: Neopeckia is characterised by carbonaceous, fragile, superficial perithecia, elongated, fully paraphysate asci anduniseptate, not constricted ascospores. Saccardo (1883) did not provide a description for the asexual morph of Neopeckia. It seems that Neopeckia has cladosporium-like conidia and conidiophores with rough walls but this has not been confirmed with molecular data (ASCO France 2011). Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Neopeckia in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Neopeckia. We could not locate the holotype specimen of N. coulteri. We illustrate a specimen of N. coulteri (BISH 606514) but did not observe any sexual morph.
