Nannfeldtia

Nannfeldtia Petr., Sydowia 1(1-3): 18 (1947).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3418; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12334, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Apothecia isolated or gregarious, often two confluent, superficial, black, shielded, at maturity. Scutelum center ± stellate dehiscent, from coalite hyphae arranged radially. Lateral excipulum slightly developed from a globular texture of very small cells, but not the underlying hypostroma. Paraphyses subequal, septate, terminal to inflate. Asci cylindrical-clavate, short pedicel, rounded at the apex, with a tiny apical ring-stained blue in Iodine. Ascospores 8-spored, parallel, filiform, often attenuated toward the base, with a very variable number of cells, but often 7-septate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Petrak 1947 and description of N. phegopteridis in Holm & Holm 1978).

 Type species: Nannfeldtia atra Petr.

Notes: Nannfeldtia is characterised by isolated or gregarious black apothecia, 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, short pedicellate asci, with a tiny apical ring-stained blue in iodine and parallel, filiform ascospores often attenuated toward the base, with a variable number of cells, but often 7-septate. Nannfeldtia resembles members of Microthyriales in having a superficial shield, which covers the developing apothecium. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Hyde et al. (2013), Kirk et al. (2013), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Nannfeldtia in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Nannfeldtia.
