Myxophora

Myxophora Döbbeler & Poelt, Mitt. bot. StSamml., Münch. 14: 315 (1978).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3398; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12333, 7 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Hyperparasitic, saprobic, algicolous or lichenicolous, on dead parts of leaves of moss. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, globose to subglobose, dark brown, with apical pore, lacking superficial mycelium. Peridium comprising 3–4 layers of dark brown cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising hyaline, pseudoparaphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, saccate, oblong ellipsoid to cylindrical clavate, sessile or with short pedicel, apex rounded, with minute ocular chamber, thick-walled. Ascospores 1–2-seriate, oblong, ellipsoid to fusiform, subglobose, aseptate, hyaline, with large guttules, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Type species: Myxophora amerospora Döbbeler & Poelt

Notes: Myxophora resembles Cleistosphaera, Parodiellina and Pilgeriella in ascomatal and asci characters. Boonmee et al. (2017) transferred Myxophora from Pseudoperisporiaceae to Botryosphaeriaceae based on morphological studies. Fresh collections are required to confirm the taxonomic placement of Myxophora.
