Mytilostoma

Mytilostoma P. Karst., Meddn Soc. Fauna Flora fenn. 5: 50 (1879).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3390; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12331, 5 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Perithecia immersed, gregarious, black, spheroid-depressed, with a prominent, linear, short subequal ostiole. Paraphyses numerous, thin, trabeculate. Asci cylindrical-clavate. Ascospores subdistichous, usually 3-or 4-septate, slightly constricted to the septa, ovoid-oblong, straight, translucent, long. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Karsten 1879).

Type species: Mytilostoma deflectens P. Karst.

Notes: Mytilostoma was introduced by Karsten (1879) with M. deflectens as type species. Mytilostoma is characterised by immersed, gregarious, black, spheroid-depressed perithecia, cylindrical-clavate asci and subdistichous, usually 3-or 4-septate ascospores. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Mytilostoma in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Mytilostoma.
