Mycoglaena Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. -naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 118: 1210 (1909).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3318; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12319, 11 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Perithecia rounded or elongated, mostly flattened and umbilicate above, soft-fleshed, not carbonaceous. Peridium thick-walled, fibrous, plectenchymatic, with cells of textura angularis or globulosa. Perithecia base thin, flat or concave. Paraphyses filamentous, long, reticulated above. Asci clavate, 8-spored. Ascospores hyaline, dictyospore. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Höhnel 1909).

Type species: Mycoglaena subcoerulescens (Nyl.) Höhn.

Notes: Mycoglaena is characterised by rounded or elongated, mostly flattened perithecia, fibrous, plectenchymatic peridium, flat or concave perithecial base, clavate, 8-spored asci and hyaline, dictyospore ascospores. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), and Kirk et al. (2013) listed Mycoglaena in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Mycoglaena.
