Mycodidymella

Mycodidymella C.Z. Wei, Y. Harada & Katum., Mycologia 90(2): 336 (1998).

Index Fungorum number: IF 27704; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12317, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Pseudothecia epiphyllous, subcuticular, subglobose or irregular, flattened and thin at apex, brown or dark brown, solitary or rarely confluent. Peridium lower and side portions variably thickened, stromatic, composed of hyaline, pseudoparenchymatous cells. Asci and pseudoparaphyses forming in a locule near the upper portion. Peridium of the upper portion thin, widest, comprising 1-2 layers of small brown cells. Ostiolar opening perforated, circular, periphysoid not seen. Pseudoparaphyses abundant among mature asci, thread-like, simple, hyaline, septate, persisting. Asci forming in a hymenium, bitunicate, clavate to cylindrical. Ascospores 2-seriatein the ascus, fusoid, septum median or submedian, constricted at the septum, tapering towards both ends, rounded at the apex. Asexual morph: Mycopappus aesculi. Synanamorph: Blastostroma aesculi (adapted from Wei et al. 1998).

Type species: Mycodidymella aesculi C.Z. Wei, Y. Harada & Katum.

Notes: Mycodidymella is characterised by epiphyllous, subcuticular, subglobose or irregular pseudothecia, circular ostiole, clavate to cylindrical asci and fusoid ascospores with septum median or submedian, constricted at the septum. Molecular data is lacking for Mycodidymella. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Mycodidymella in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Mycodidymella.
