Muricopeltis

Muricopeltis Viégas, Bragantia 4(1-6): 55 (1944).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3291; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05168, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata hypophyllous, black, grouped, ostiolate, with hyaline margin. Upper wall comprising brown meandering hyphae. Asci globose, 8-spored, hyaline, lack paraphyses. Ascospores clavate, muriform, brown, smooth. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zeng et al. 2019).

 Type species: Muricopeltis brasiliensis Viégas

Notes: Muricopeltis is characterised by hypophyllous, black, grouped, ostiolate ascomata, globose, 8-spored, hyaline asci and clavate, muriform, brown, smooth ascospores. Viégas (1944) referred Muricopeltis to Hemisphaeriaceae (Microthyriales). Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) and Kirk et al. (2013) accepted Muricopeltis in Micropeltidaceae. Hyde et al. (2013) did not accept Muricopeltis in Micropeltidaceae and referred it to Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Zeng et al. (2019) were unable to locate the type specimen of M. brasiliensis as it appears to be lost. Zeng et al. (2019) provided a description based on the original protologue. Zeng et al. (2019) excluded Muricopeltis from Micropeltidaceae based on its brown, muriform ascospores. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Muricopeltis.
