Montagnella Speg., Anal. Soc. cient. argent. 12(4): 186 (1881).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3262; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12309, 9 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Stromata orbicular, solitary confluent, rare. Ascomata superficial, globose, densely aggregated in the center of the stroma, in a dry, umbilicate-cupulate, slender, membranous-sub carbonaceous, algal-cellulose, dark-brown. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, obtusely rounded and coarse, tapering towards base, stalked, aparaphysate. Ascospores obliquely monostic, irregularly, elliptic, rounded on both sides, pseudoseptate in the middle, to the septum not scarcely constricted, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Spegazzini 1881).

 Type species: Montagnella curumamuel Speg.

Notes: Montagnella is characterised by orbicular, solitary confluent, rare stromata, superficial, globose, densely aggregated ascomata, cylindrical, obtusely rounded asci and obliquely monostic, irregularly, elliptic ascospores. Molecular data is lacking. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Montagnella in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Montagnella.
