Monorhizina
Monorhizina Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 13(3/4): 220 (1915).
Index Fungorum number: IF 25487; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12307, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Epiphytic on leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata on upper and lower surfaces of fern leaves, more or less circular, when mature entirely superficial, black, crustose, at first subcuticular, mycelium of ascomata only in contact with leaf tissue through stomata. Outer wall of radially arranged, pigmented and agglutinated mycelium. Hypostroma of pigmented and thickened hyphae. Loculi annular or linear covered by agglutinated mycelium which at maturity cracks and exposes hymenium. Hymenium of closely compacted asci. Pseudoparaphyses absent. Asci elliptical or clavate, bitunicate, 8 spored. Ascospores biseriately or uniseriately arranged, one septate, elliptical, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Dingley 1972).
Type species: Monorhizina filicina (Berk. & Broome) Theiss. & Syd.
Notes: Monorhizina was introduced by Theissen and Sydow (1915) with M. filicina as type species. Monorhizina is characterised by more or less circular ascomata, hypostroma of pigmented and thickened hyphae, elliptical or clavate, bitunicate, 8-spored asci and one septate, elliptical, hyaline ascospores. Theissen and Sydow (1915) referred Monorhizina in Microthyriaceae. Müller and von Arx (1962) and Dingley (1972) synonymized Monorhizina under Lauterbachiella and Rhagadolobium. Hofmann (2010) treated Monorhizina in Microthyriaceae. Kirk et al. (2013) considered Monorhizina as a distinct genus without giving a familial rank. Wijayawardene et al. (2017) listed Monorhizina as a genus in Microthyriaceae. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) and Hongsanan et al. (2020b) did not accept Monorhizina in Microthyriaceae and referred it to Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Monorhizina.
