Mendoziopeltis

Mendoziopeltis Bat., Publicações Inst. Micol. Recife 56: 434 (1959).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3120; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05168, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Hyphae superficial, brown, septate, reticulate, without setae or hyphopodia. Sexual morph: Ascomata flattened, brown, with a central pseudo-ostiole and fimbriated margins. Upper wall brown, comprising cells of hyphal network that anastomosing at central ostiole, closely reticulate, constricted at septa. Asci 3-spored, unitunicate, ellipsoid to subglobose, lack paraphyses. Ascospores cylindrical, muriform, 7–9 transverse septa, 7–12 vertical septa, constricted at septa, hyaline at young state, become light brown when mature, with a basal hyaline appendage. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zeng et al. 2019).

Type species: Mendoziopeltis byrsonimae Bat. & Nascim. ex Bat.

Notes: Mendoziopeltis is characterised by flattened, brown ascomata, ellipsoid to subglobose asci and cylindrical, muriform ascospores with 7–9 transverse septa, 7–12 vertical septa. Hyde et al. (2013), Kirk et al. (2013), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Mendoziopeltis in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Zeng et al. (2019) could not locate the type specimen of Mendoziopeltis. They excluded Mendoziopeltis from Micropeltidaceae based on the muriform ascospores and texture of upper wall. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Mendoziopeltis.
