Maublancia

Maublancia G. Arnaud, Annals d'École National d'Agric. de Montpellier, Série 2 16(1-4): 158 (1918) [1917].

Index Fungorum number: IF 3027; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12286, 7 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Biotrophic on the upper surface of leaves appearing as indistinct black spots. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia circular, gregarious, superficial, membranaceous, brown to black, basal peridium poorly developed, opening by splitting to form a central irregular ostiole; in section lenticular. Peridium a single stratum, comprising a few layers of black-brown cells of textura prismatica. Hamathecium comprising asci embedded in mucilage inclined towards the center, pseudoparaphyses not observed. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, saccate to broadly cylindrical, apedicellate, with a distinct ocular chamber, not bluing in IKI. Ascospores overlapping uniseriate, hyaline, ovoid, 2-celled, the upper cells larger than the lower cells, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wu et al. 2011).

Type species: Maublancia myrtacearum G. Arnaud

Notes: Maublancia is characterised by circular, gregarious, superficial, membranaceous thyriothecia, saccate to broadly cylindrical, apedicellate asci and hyaline, ovoid, 2-celled, smooth-walled ascospores. Arnaud (1917) placed Maublancia in Microthyriaceae. Stevens and Ryan (1939) transferred M. myrtacearum to Parasterina in Asterinaceae as P. myrtacearum. Müller and Arx (1962) re-described Maublancia and treated it in Microthyriaceae. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) accepted Maublancia in Microthyriaceae. Wu et al. (2011) examined the holotype specimen of M. myrtacearum and excluded Maublancia from Microthyriaceae based on the superficial hyphae with hyphopodia and thyriothecia opening via splitting to form a central irregular ostiole which more resembled members of Asterinaceae. Wu et al. (2011) mentioned that Maublancia is morphologically similar to Asterinella and might be a synonym. Hyde et al. (2013) followed Wu et al. (2011) and excluded Maublancia from Microthyriaceae. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Maublancia in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking for Maublancia. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Maublancia.
